Last week, the state House Public Safety Subcommittee passed House File 573 by a 2 to 1 vote. This important self-defense legislation is now scheduled to be heard by the full committee tomorrow, January 31.

The Senate Courts of Justice Committee on Wednesday approved a measure that would eliminate Virginia’s one-gun-a-month restriction on handgun purchases, setting up what could be the most significant change to Virginia’s gun laws in years.

Tomorrow, the state House Judiciary Committee will hear an NRA-supported bill: House Bill 2471 would reform the background check requirements for firearm purchases by CPL holders. HB 2471 will be heard tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. in Hearing Room A of the John L. O’Brien Building in Olympia.

An online campaign in support of a former U.S. Marine arrested for attempting to security check his pistol while visiting the Empire State Building is bringing new attention and a fair amount of scrutiny to one of the nation’s toughest gun control laws.
Ryan Jerome, 28, was charged with criminal possession of his .45 caliber Ruger while visiting the famous New York landmark during a September vacation with his girlfriend. Jerome has a license to carry the weapon from his home state of Indiana, but New Yorks state gun laws do not recognize out of state permits.

During the opening week of West Virginia’s 2012 legislative session, Delegate John Doyle (D-57) introduced House Bill 2229, legislation which would limit the number of handguns that law-abiding individuals would be able purchase in West Virginia. This “gun rationing” bill has been sent to the state House Judiciary Committee for further consideration.

The federal government has approved for importation some 86,000 M1 rifles from South Korea. The move comes after hard work by the NRA-ILA and its allies in Congress, Sen. John Tester (D-Mont.) and Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.).
