The Department of Justice and ATF have missed repeated deadlines to turn over information and documents to Sen. Charles Grassley (R Iowa), who’s investigating. ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson (at left) was scheduled to appear before a Senate hearing Thursday, in which he would likely have been asked questions about the scandal. However, CBS News has confirmed Melson has now been pulled from the hearing witness list.

Senate Bill 432, introduced by state Senator Greg Evers (R-2), was heard in the Senate Health Regulation Committee today. A strike-all amendment, containing revised language agreed to by the NRA and the Florida Medical Association was offered and passed by an 8 to 4 vote with two Republicans and two Democrats voting against the bill. SB 432 would stop anti-gun doctors from asking children and parents if they own guns and then telling them to get rid of their guns. It further stops doctors from denying care to children if the parents refuse to answer questions about gun ownership.

Recently, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) — who in the early 1990s was the House sponsor of the Brady Act and the federal “assault weapons” and “large” magazine ban of 1994-2004, and the ill-fated, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink “Brady II” bill — introduced S. 436, the multi-faceted “Fix Gun Checks Act of 2011.”

This Thursday, March 24, the Oregon House will consider House Bill 2797 A-Engrossed, legislation that would codify the term “readily accessible” as it relates to carrying a concealed firearm on outdoor recreation vehicles. This bill had previously passed the House Judiciary Committee by a unanimous vote. Also, yesterday the state House passed House Bill 2792 A-Engrossed, important right-to-carry recognition legislation, by a 40 to 17 vote. This legislation now moves to the state Senate.

For the past two months, it has been expected that President Obama would speak out on gun control and the Second Amendment. Obama’s anti-gun base has been hoping that he would finally openly embrace their prohibitionist agenda. But Obama has proven over the past few years that he knows taking on America’s gun owners is a bad political move, and that means he must take a different tack — claiming at every turn that he supports the Second Amendment.
