On Wednesday, January 26, the House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance Committee, led by pro-gun state Representative Tony Cornish (R-24B), passed HF 161 by a 10-7 vote. HF 161 was introduced by state Representative Steve Drazkowski (R-28B). Please contact the members of the Civil Law Committee and respectfully voice your support for this legislation. Also, please thank the members of the House Public Safety and Crime Prevention and Finance Committee for supporting the passage of HF 161.

On Monday, January 31, at 9 a.m. in Senate Room B of the Capitol, the Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on Senate Bill 850, introduced by state Senator Chap Petersen (D-34), legislation repealing the Commonwealth’s ban on Sunday hunting.

As expected, the Chairman of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, state Senator Brian Frosh (D-16), has introduced two bills, Senate Bill 161 and Senate Bill 162.
Recently, the NRA has been contacted by members seeking clarification with the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s failure to list recognition of Virginia’s concealed handgun permit.
The Virginia State Police and Mississippi Highway Patrol quickly responded to the NRA’s request for information and notified us that the problem rests with an error on the Mississippi Highway Patrol website.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is working to correct the error.

Worried about the safety of people who study and work on college campuses lawmakers across the nation are pushing bills aimed at arming college and university faculty members. Florida, Arizona and Texas are among the states considering such laws.

Today, the Senate Privileges & Elections Subcommittee voted to refer SB 1213, sponsored by state Senator Ralph Smith (R-22), to the full committee. Senate Bill 1213 would provide that the State Board of Elections, in cooperation with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, would make mail voter registration application forms available where hunting and fishing licenses are sold. Senate Bill 1346, an identical bill to SB 1213 and introduced by state Senator Thomas Norment (R-3), was rolled into Senator Smith’s bill before referral.
Most Americans have not changed their views on gun control following the shooting nine days ago in Tucson, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll out Monday.

On Monday, January 17 at 4 p.m., the Virginia Senate Courts of Justice Criminal Subcommittee will hold a hearing on SB 876. Sponsored by Senator Richard Stuart (R-28), SB 876 would codify into statute a version of “castle doctrine” legislation and would allow a lawful occupant to use physical force, including deadly force, against an intruder in his dwelling who has committed an overt act against him, without civil liability.
